Christopher P.
Private tutor in Santa Fe, NM
Education
In 2003 I received undergraduate degrees in physics and philosophy from MIT. While there, I tutored physics, enjoyed it very much, and bookmarked the idea of tutoring. Since that time I've made by way as a creative writer, teaching math and related subjects in a mostly informal capacity. I've recently moved to Santa Fe and am inspired to return to tutoring.
Experience
I'm especially interested in tutoring math subjects from algebra to calculus and beyond. Working with family and friends, I've learned what math phobia is. Often it's the result of a lack of personalized, patient, creative teaching. Different minds learn math differently, and I'm one of those different minds. Whether remedial or advanced, I'd like to show students where the joy is, or at least where the relief is: in developing math intuition, discovering multiple, self-reinforcing paths to a solution, and learning how to let insight, more than mechanical methods, work through a problem. (This isn't to say that mechanical methods aren't important! They just aren't all-important.) I look at math as a set of creative challenges, not a cookbook of recipes you'll probably never try. I don't come at this from a standardized-test mentality, though I'd be happy to help students sharpen their analytical toolkit in general. To get good or better at something, don't you have to like it more than you hate it? Since I'm naturally enthusiastic about the subject, I'd like to help students do just that.
